Marine Biological Association of the UK (MBA)

The MBA has particular expertise in setting up experimental seawater systems and maintaining marine organisms. This includes tanks for mesocosms and controlled-temperature experimental rooms for observations on living systems. The Molecular Processes Group has been developed to address the need for better understanding of mechanisms underlying major biological and biogeochemical processes in the oceans.
Main tasks in the project

  • Use of mesocosms to establish an integrated infaunal-geochemical-microbial understanding of oil spill remediation (WP5)
  • Assess the effect of hydrocarbon-dispersant mixes on sediment fauna and microbial oil degradation (WP6)
Michael Cunliffe - Contact this person by email

Dr Cunliffe is a MBA Fellow and leader of the Marine Microbial Biogeochemistry Group. He has a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Manchester. Research addresses both fundamental and applied aspects of marine microbiology. Attention is focused on linking microbial diversity with ecosystem functioning, particularly in the context of ecological interactions and biogeochemical cycling. He has experience and expertise in microbial ecology, biogeochemistry, physiology and biochemistry.
