Sediment treatments (WP5)

Efficient cleanup of contaminated sediments due to oil spills. Emphasis on biotechnological solution

Federico Aulenta, CNR-IRSA

The main objective of this WP is to develop novel or improved technologies, which accelerate the biodegradation of hydrocarbons in contaminated sediments. WP5 will address a range of contamination scenarios, i.e., from “freshly” contaminated sediments to those subjected to chronic pollution, and climate regions, i.e., from Mediterranean to Norwegian sea.
Major objectives:
The focus is on the enhancement of biodegradation rates in contaminated sediments by providing:

  • extra electron acceptors such as solid electrodes or oxygen
  • infauna
  • micro/macro nutrients, possibly in combination with contaminant mobilizing agents
  • controlled environmental conditions
